Tropical Feathers - Costa Rica Birdwatching
Tropical Feathers is a 100% Costa Rican owned company that offers high quality birdwatching tours for both the avid and novice birders. In addition to our extensive technical training in eco-tourism and natural resources management, we can boast of over 10 years experience in designing eco-friendly tours to Costa Rica's diverse coastal, montane and rainforest habitats.

Resplendet Quetzal Costa Rica

As an owner operated birding company, we are able to bring personalized attention to every single detail of our tours. By doing so we can make sure both individual clients or group participants get the best birding experience possible during their stay in Costa Rica.

Our interest and involvement in conservation efforts is an important part of our companys ethos. Tropical Feathers sponsors the Fila Costera Bird Count in the Southern Pacific part of the country. This count seeks to provide a better understanding of the bird species and populations in the area, while at the same time encouraging conservation efforts. We feel this encourages and attract a more environmentally concerned type of tourism.

Your birding tour with Tropical Feathers also helps support our educational efforts which seeks to involve more Costa Ricans in the delights and challenges of observing and preserving birds and their natural habitats. We at Tropical Feathers do this by organizing and supporting workshops that endevour to help both students and locals learn about birds in their beautiful country.

Noel Ureña Our guide and co-owner, Noel Ureña, has lead nature trips since 1997. He is also the founder, organizer and compiler of the Fila Costera Bird Count. His interest in nature and birding has been with him since he was a kid. A whole life in direct contact with the natural environment of Costa Rica has helped him to develop sharp birding and observational skills that will contribute to the success of every birdwatching tour. His enthusiasm for every trip is evident at all times. He is always delighted to walk the extra mile to share Costa Rica's bird life with you.

Besides offering trips, our web site also includes an extensive Costa Rica Bird Photo Gallery which is continually updated. A complete Costa Rica bird list along with continually updated trip reports. A regional and Costa Rican endemic species list is also available on the website as well.

Enjoy the site and we hope to see you join us on one of our trips!

Bird Watching Costa Rica

We delight in the beauty of our feathered friends; the birds.

Scintillant Hummingbird
Their songs are to be enjoyed, and we get amazed everytime we find a nest. As birds continue to fascinate people around the world, Costa Rica becomes a more interesting destination for birdwatchers.

So many bird species and habitats, and the possibility to access them within relatively short distances make this small country a paradise for birdwatchers. With only 51,100 square kilometers (19,678 Square Miles), Costa Rica, boasts an avifauna of 878 species, grouped into 75 different families.

With twelve different life zones the diversity of habitats includes highland and lowland forests, subalpine rain páramos, rocky or slow flowing rivers, mangroves, marshes, forest swamps, lagoons, two different seashores, and numerous man-made habitats like pastures, rice fields, coffee plantations, and secondary growth.

We really recommend while you visit Costa Rica, to take some time to not just watch the birds, but to enjoy their behaviors and songs, and the special aspects of their tropical habitats, after all that is the essence of birdwatching!
