Birdwatching in Costa Rica The following are Costa Rican lodges or hotels located in very intense birding destinations. We can book this places for you or help you with any other destination that you prefer. We can as well prepare birding itineraries for part or your whole visit to Costa Rica. This itineraries can include professional guide, transportation, or rented car, flights, and any other service necessary for your trip.
In most cases we have added a link to pages for the hotel, please feel free to access them to read more information. You can also book your stay by filling out the forms in those pages. We always recommend that you mention you are a birdwatcher, some of these lodges have guests that might not be birders, so it is good to point it out. Savegre Lodge Savegre Mountain Lodge (Talamanca Mountain Range - Cerro de la Muerte)
The Savegre Mountain Hotel, also known as Cabinas Chacón, is located in San Gerardo de Dota, a small community in the Talamanca mountains of Costa Rica in the midst of a precious ecosystem... Here you will find a deep cloud forest filled with massive oaks and other native species. The woods serve as a sanctuary for a large number of mammals and innumerable species of insects, amphibians, amazing plants, and colorful birds, a paradise for birdwatchers. Over 170 bird species have been observed in the area and its multiple hiking trails in the Cloud Forest ( A lot of regional endemic bird species). Bosque de Paz Bosque de Paz Lodge (Caribbean Slope - Central Volcanic Range)
We have recorded more than 331 species of birds at our preserve since July, 1997, including Resplendent Quetzal, Scaled Antpitta, Black Guan, Emerald Toucanet, Three Wattled Bellbird, Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Zeledonia, and Silvery-fronted, Tapaculo, Black--faced Solitaire, American Dipper, Golden-browed Chlorophonia, among many others, and abundant hummingbirds. Trails ranging from 1 kilometer to 7.5 kilometers, adding up to 22 kilometers through old growth and second growth forest, are available to admire wonders of nature, outstanding birds, and wildlife at BOSQUE DE PAZ. A peaceful beautiful lodge, with lots of birds!
Rancho Naturalista Rancho Naturalista (Caribbean Foothills - Turrialba)
Our 125-acre ranch lies in pre-mountain rain forest in the Caribbean zone at 3000 feet. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded by guests locally. Villa Lapas Hotel Villa Lapas (Central Pacific Slope - near Tárcoles River Mouth)
Hotel Villa Lapas, situated in a narrow valley along a rippling stream just minutes from the Carara National Park. This preserve marks the northern limit of Pacific lowland wet forest in Costa Rica and has biological influence from the tropical dry forest of the North Pacific. It is home to Scarlet Macaws, Baird's Trogons, Fiery-billed Aracaris, Yellow-billed Cotingas, and Orange-collared Manakins -- as just a sample of the hundreds of possible species.

La Selva Biological Station La Selva Biological Station (Caribbean Lowlands - Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí)
At the confluence of two major rivers in the Caribbean lowlands of northern Costa Rica, La Selva comprises 1,600 hectares (3,900 acres) of tropical wet forests and disturbed lands.
The more than 60 kilometers of excellent trails provide unparalleled access to tropical rain forest habitat that is home to such species as Great Tinamou, Great Curassow, Great Potoo and Great Antshrike -- what can we say, it's "great" birding!
Species´ diversity is spectacular, including more than 1,900 species of plants, 330 species of trees, 436 species of birds, and 450 species of ants. SITE: La Selva Biological Station
Selva Verde Lodge Selva Verde Lodge (Caribbean Lowlands - near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí)
Selva Verde Lodge is located in the lush lowlands of northeastern Costa Rica on a very large, private tract of virgin tropical rainforest and rich second-growth habitats. It is adjacent to Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Organization for Tropical Studies' field station, La Selva. Selva Verde has an immense biodiversity, which is of great importance to the Sarapiquí area. Thanks to the 500 acres of private reserve with primary forest, Selva Verde Lodge has for you to see: - 120 species of mammals (including 60 species of bats) - 420 species of birds - 43 species of fish - 55 species of snakes (it includes 7 poisonous) - 500 species of butterflies - 50 species of frogs

Bosque del Rio Tigre Bosque del Rio Tigre Lodge (Osa Peninsula - near Puerto Jimenez)
Our lodge is located on the side of the Tigre River just outside the small town of Dos Brazos on the Osa Peninsula. This remote location in the Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce surrounding Corcovado National Park gives the visitor a truly exhilarating sense of the tropical rainforest. The lodge itself is completely surrounded by primary and secondary forest.
Birding our property and surrounding area is especially fruitful due to the diverse habitats found in the river valley, more than 400 species of birds including the Scarlet Macaw, Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager, White-tipped Sicklebill, Band-tailed Barbthroat, Turquoise Cotinga, Yellow-billed Cotinga, White-crested Coquette, Marbled Wood-Quail, Whistling Wren, Red-throated Caracara and the Harpy Eagle.
La Cusinga Lodge La Cusinga Lodge (Southern Pacific Coast - just South from Ballena Marine National Park)
La Cusinga Lodge is a coastal rainforest ecolodge dedicated to marine and terrestrial conservation and environmental education. Its location on the southern Pacific coast provides guests with sweeping ocean views and enchanting beaches. In addition La Cusinga is part of a private nature reserve that supplies the visitor with an unparalleled look at Costa Rican wildlife and rainforest. The reserve consists primarily of 250 hectares of virgin rainforest that borders thousands of more acres of privately protected forest, over 450 species of birds have been reported in the area, and the lodge is located on the edge of the Fila Costera Bird Count. Hacienda Baru Birding Tower Hacienda Baru Lodge (Southern Pacific Slope - just 1.5 Km North from Dominical)
Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge is situated on Costa Rica´s Southern Pacific Coast. This is a region of distinct natural beauty, where forest covered mountains rise up from the dramatic Pacific coastline. Hacienda Baru´s 330 hectares (815 acres) have a fantastic variety of habitats, from wetland and secondary forest in the lowlands to primary forest as you go up on the coastal ridge. 7 Km of walking trails and 3 Km of pristine beach are here to be explored, as well as an orchid garden and butterfly garden. The list of birds includes 318 species that have ocurred in the refuge, and more than 450 species for the area. Come and enjoy the birdlife from our birding tower. Hacienda Baru is located inside the Fila Costera Bird Count area near Dominical and it is direct supporter of this conservation effort.
Arenal Observatory Fantastic Birding Trails Arenal Observatory Lodge (Arenal National Park)
Arenal Observatory Lodge sits in a private nature reserve in the heart of one of Costa Rica's numerous natural areas. Rich volcanic soil supports primary and secondary rainforest. Waterfalls and crystalline rivers offer sparkling jungle refreshment. A well marked and manicured trail system traverses the property and provides easy access to the breathtaking natural beauty. Our peaceful lodge is located in the heart of the Talamanca Mountains at an elevation of 1650 meters (5,414 ft) in Southern Pacific Costa Rica. Surrounded by gardens and natural habitat where birds fly over all day long, our lodge is a peaceful spot to spend a few days, a week or your entire vacation.
Bosque del Tolomuco offers a quiet environment for birdwatching. We have numerous well maintained trails for easy hiking and birding in the secondary and primary cloud forest. It is possible to observe Black Guan, Slate-throated Redstart, Silver-thorated Tanager, Collared Trogon, Resplendent Quetzal, and even good chances for the uncommon Red-fronted Parrolet and Buffy-crowned Wood-Partridge ! Our growing bird list is up to 160 species.
Talari Lodge Talari Lodge (Southern Pacific Slope - 10 km from San Isidro de El General)
Talari Lodge is located in Southern Costa Rica, just 15 minutes from the town of San Isidro de El General, on the road to Rivas and to Chirripó National Park. Our 20 acres property offers extraordinary birding opportunities. With over 200 species reported, Talari is also good strategic location to explore inetresting sites near by like Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary, Fila Tinamastes, La Quebrads Biological Reserve, and more. It is possible to observe 60 to 70 species in one morning. Some species include Speckled Tanager, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Green Honeycreeper, Pale-breasted Spinetail, Barred Antshrike, Pearl Kite, Orange-collared Manakin, and Turquoise Cotinga. Laguna Lodge Laguna Lodge (Tortuguero National Park)
Laguna Lodge is a rain forest ecotourism lodge, a leader among this tropical country’s hotels and resorts with an extra touch in style, comfort and personalized service.
